Finding a Grant

What.  I spent a great deal of time shuffling through a variety of grants.  Most of the grants did not fit with my class because I teach Social Studies.  I found that a large number of the grants concentrated on Math and Science or had a state or low-income requirement.  I teach in an affluent school district with a low number of minority students.  All that stated, I did find a grant provided by State farm Insurance that appears to be open to anyone who teaches K-12.  I would like to have found a grant that fits the needs of my classroom.  Money for apps would have been great.  The district is really supportive in this area but it would be nice to demonstrate my interest in helping in these budget sensitive times.

Why I kind of answered this question in the What section.  I think that getting the opportunity to have additional funds for the school and my class is always welcome.

When Applying for the grant is an easy endeavor.  Simply fill out the application at http://www.statefarm.com/aboutus/community/grants/company/company.asp and wait for a response.  It appears it will help your possibilities if you mention any of the following.
  • Financial Literacy
  • Access to Higher Education/Closing the Achievement Gap
  • Community Safety and Natural Disaster Preparedness
  • Environmental Responsibility
  • Societal Health and Wellness Issues

  1. It is a shame that you could not find a grant that would fit more of your needs, I am wondering if you have another way to get a more direct grant?

  2. That really is too bad that you could not find a more direct grant that fits your needs. It seems that Math and Science are the grants main points, but I'm there is a need for Social Studies and hopefully you can find one that is more specific to what you want.

  3. As a special education math teacher in an inner city, I have never really thought about how hard it could be to find a grant for some teachers. I am happy that you were able to find one that applies to you.

  4. ING also has a grant that is open to various subject areas and relatively easy to apply for. I found it listed on the grant search. Sometimes, its not about specifically finding a grant that is exactly what you want, but using what you want to get to develop a really stellar grant that makes people want to give you money!

  5. I saw on the grant website that your grant supports teacher development. Since it doesn't seem to specifically meet the needs of your students, you could consider this route.

  6. I agree with everyone else that it is a shame that their are not more content specific grants out there. I think it wiuld be a wise idea if you do one about development or technology (since you took this class)

  7. Grants like the one you are looking into seem perfect for your classroom. You already have the great opportunity to utilize a classroom set of iPads, and what better way to improve that teaching experience than to acquire some additional funds to support the development of your curriculum with related applications.
